Swing!
While Broadway musicals may be in short supply, dance shows are thriving. For the second time in less than a month the Buell is filled with hoofers. This time its swing dancers of every stripe—Jive, the Lindy, Latin Swing, West Coast Swing, Hip-Hop Swing, and Country Western Swing—in, what else, Swing!
Choreographed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett to a combination of original compositions and old standards by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Johnnie Mercer, Benny Goodman, Louis Prima, Bob Wills, and others, the action ranges from fast and furious to slow and seductive. Some of the unique sketches include a male-female bar conversation communicated entirely in scat and a woman emerging from a bass to serenade the player.
The house band, an octet, is hot, pumping out worthy solo work as well as tight renditions of the classics. The vocal work varies from okay to excellent. If you're trying to talk your partner into dance lessons or just want to get "In the Mood", Swing!'s the thing. It runs through November 18th. 303-893-4100.
